In the spring of 1875, a black and white Appaloosa colt was

born on the Colorado high plains, just west of Ute Pass. He had the

mark of a handprint on his chest, and though white at birth, the mark

would appear yellow as the Colt got older.

In December of that year, a company of U.S. Cavalry on their way

north from New Mexico came upon a band of wild horses. They

captured many of the herd and drove them north to be used as

replacement mounts for the U. S. Army. Although the Colt narrowly

escaped capture, his Mother was among those taken.

This is the story of that Colt, and his attempt to find and rescue his
